Correction of the neck contour is a complicated issue. There are a multitude of neck shapes and sizes. Some people have long thin necks; some have short thick necks. Neck contour is influenced by skin, underlying fat, and neck muscle tone. Depending on the patient’s anatomy, age and desires there are completely different solutions to the problem. See all before and after plastic surgery gallery pictures.

The Consultation

If you are wondering what to expect for your consultation with our plastic surgeon, there are several generalizations that can be made:

  • Young patients: In patients under 30 years old, the skin has a great deal of elasticity and therefore neck correction can be performed with small, well hidden scars. Whether the young patient needs tightening of the neck muscles or just liposuction their skin will shrink and conform to the new neck shape.
  • In middle aged patient correction of the lax skin is usually necessary. This means, in addition to addressing the neck muscles and fat content of the neck a face lift style scar is usually necessary to have the neck skin conform to the new shape.
  • In aging necks, prominent muscle bands and loose skin are the most prominent feature. Many patients with aging necks only want their neck corrected. This can be difficult and sometimes unwise to do. Correcting only the neck can lead to a “non-harmonious” appearance, which looks odd to the casual observer.

Care & Recovery

The procedures are performed in our fully accredited surgical center, which was created specifically for the care of cosmetic patients. Depending on the extent of the procedure performed, you may or may not be recommended to stay overnight. For instance, a young patient having liposuction of the neck would go home shortly after the procedure. An aging patient with tightening of the skin would stay one to two nights in our cosmetic surgery hotel. There is full-time nursing coverage to help with all aspects of your recovery. In all cases swelling and bruising can be expected to be socially limiting for the first 7-10 days.
