The eyebrow plays an important role in expression, appearance and perceived age. As the eyebrow falls there is initially hooding and excess skin that appears on the outside of the eyes. With time, the falling eyebrow will crowd the eye giving a sad or angry look. Equally important is to avoid over-lifting the brow surgically as this can lead to a surprised or startled appearance. The other signs of aging in the brow are wrinkles and creases, especially between the eyes and across the forehead. These are caused by the small muscles of expression and frequently treated with Botox. Performing a brow lift allows the plastic surgeon to permanently block these muscles, preventing the need for a lifetime of Botox injections.
Brow Lift Consultation
Dr. Hubbard will help you determine if a brow lift is right for you as many patients will never need a brow lift. If your eyebrow is positioned to low there are several decisions still to make. The most important is incision choice. There are three choices: endoscopic, bicoronal, and hairline. In patients with low hairlines, either an endoscopic (limited small incisions behind the hairline) or a bicoronal (full incision behind the hairline) incision can be used. The endoscopic technique has less incisions and less chance for scalp sensation loss, but also has less permanence of correction. Both procedures slightly raise the hairline. Patients with already elevated hairlines often benefit from an incision at the hairline. The beveled incision allows subsequent regrowth of hair through the incision line, making the eventual scar barely noticeable.
Brow Lift After Care and Recovery
The recovery depends on what other procedures are performed at the same time. If the brow lift was performed in isolation. There is bruising and swelling that would limit social activities for 10 to 14 days. The procedure can be performed in our surgicenter. It could be performed as a day surgery or an overnight stay could be recommended at our cosmetic surgery hotel. Normal activities can be resumed after 2 weeks.
The ultimate goal is to “open-up” the area around the eye, giving a brighter more youthful appearance. At the same time the wrinkles and lines of the forehead are smoothed. Again, not every patient will need a brow lift depending on their facial proportion.
