What is Liposuction?

Liposuction or lipoplasty is a procedure to reduce stubborn pockets of fats in specific areas of body, reshaping the targeted areas, enhancing body contours and proportion, and providing an overall improved appearance. An experienced cosmetic surgeon will evaluate a patient for body weight and other factors before recommending this procedure.

Excess fat deposits in particular areas of the body may occur, not because the patient is overweight or lacks in fitness, but more often due to family traits. The surgery can be used to reduce excess fat deposits in the abdominal area, hips and thighs, arms, back, neck, inner knee, cheeks and chin, chest, or calves and ankles. The procedure may be performed independently, or in combination with other cosmetic surgeries such as breast reduction, facelift, or tummy tuck.

Not a Weight Reduction Procedure

Liposuction is not a weight reduction procedure or a treatment for obesity. Patients who need to lose weight may have to look at other surgical or non-surgical options. It is also not a substitute for fitness activities and balanced diet. Patients who suffer from cellulite or dimpled skin that may appear on hips, buttocks or thighs may also have to look for alternative procedures because this surgery may not address these concerns.

Ideal Candidates for Liposuction

An ideal candidate for liposuction is a person with stubborn fat pockets in the body, which do not respond to exercise or diet. Such a person would be maintaining a physically active lifestyle and also preferably, exercising regularly. If such an individual is unhappy due to excess fat deposits in certain areas of the body, he or she may benefit significantly from this surgery.

The weight of an adult should be at the most 30 percent higher than the ideal weight to choose this procedure. Anyone with a higher body weight than this may be required to lose weight to the required range before going for this procedure. It is also important to wait until the weight has stabilized before the procedure can be undertaken.

An ideal candidate  will also have good muscle tone and elastic skin. The person should have good general health and not be suffering from any life-threatening diseases or other health conditions that may hamper healing. The person should be a non-smoker, or should quit smoking for an adequate period before and after the procedure. Persons with realistic expectations, specific goals with regard to body contours and a general positive outlook will usually receive more satisfactory results.

Losing Weight Before Surgery

If the cosmetic surgeon decides that a candidate is overweight and unfit for this procedure, it is a judicious idea to discuss whether any alternative procedures should be considered. In some cases, the surgeon may suggest the patient to lose body weight and bring it closer to the ideal weight levels. The patient can lose excess weight following a dedicated exercise regimen and a balanced diet program under the supervision for a trained weight loss expert.

The weight loss should be achieved in normal progression, without opting for any crash diet or excessive exercise regimen that the body may not be able to bear. It is very important to allow the body weight to stabilize for a period of time, and only then the option of this surgery should be re-considered. In cases where weight loss does not reduce stubborn fat deposits, this may be an effective solution to improve body contours, shape and proportion.

Preparation

Even when the body weight has stabilized within the normal range, the plastic surgeon may conduct a thorough evaluation to ensure the patient is a fit candidate. The patient may be asked to undergo a medical evaluation for lab tests. Any medications that the candidate may be taking may have to be adjusted or stopped temporarily.
