Are you wondering just what exactly a tummy tuck is? This is actually a very common plastic surgery procedure. Tummy tucks are very popular with women who have had children and may have excess skin or an abdominal bulge that won’t go away with normal diet and exercise. This surgery is also commonly done as part of a “mommy makeover” or series of procedures such as breast augmentation or liposuction.

It is important to note however, that a tummy tuck is not just for women. The procedure can also be performed on men or anyone who has experienced massive weight loss and is again left with excess skin in their abdominal region.

How long will it take to see visible results?

What’s Involved In A Tummy Tuck? Dallas Plastic Surgeon - Bradley Hubbard MD

Results are close to immediate, aside from the obvious bruising and swelling that will occur with any surgical procedure. This is an abdominal surgery, so patients should expect to be sore, but typically you could expect to be up and around and performing normal activities without assistance within 10-14 days following the tummy tuck. No heavy lifting should be allowed for the first month following surgery, but after that time frame, most patients get back into their regular exercise routines

Will anyone know that I had surgery?

That is really up to you. A tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia and the surgery itself usually takes between 2-5 hours. Drains are usually necessary and will be kept in place for a week to 10 days, so that is a good time to lay low and recover. You will need to be closely monitored by your surgeon for 2 to 3 days following surgery.

Incisions will be made low across the abdomen and span the length of your hip bones. You will also have incisions around the belly button. When performed by an experienced and well-qualified surgeon, scarring should heal beautifully and be only noticeable perhaps in the most intimate situations. So, will people at the pool or beach know you had a tummy tuck? Probably not.

Is everyone a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

The short answer is no. Every body is different, which is why it is so important to have a thorough consultation process with your surgeon. In general, if you are still planning to lose a lot of weight following surgery, or if you plan to have more children, a tummy tuck is not the best option. Aside from that, individuals in good health and in their target weight range are usually good candidates for a tummy tuck.

Love your results.

Like any surgery, you should do your research before choosing a surgeon. Make sure you are comfortable and have all of your questions answered about the procedure. When performed correctly, tummy tucks show excellent results that are permanent so long as you have no major diet or weight changes following surgery. You can expect to have a flatter tummy, a smaller waistline and to feel great in your clothes. No wonder this is a such a popular surgery!
